II. The Cone of Experience
Illustrate or draw Edgar Dale’s Cone of Experience.
This is in a cone shaped form, It is categorized in 6. At the top of the cone, The first is the reading or what we read, with 10percent, the second is hearing words or what we hear with 20 percent and the third is seeing or what we see with 30 percent, the fourth is watching movie, looking exhibit and etc. What we see and hear with 50 percent, These are all under passive learning. The next one is the Participation with the discussion or What we say with 70 percent and the last one are Doing Dramatic scenes, simulation with real object or what we say and do with 90 percent are under Active learning.
Briefly discuss each of the elements in the diagram.
at the top of the cone, The first is the reading or what we read, with 10percent – It is all about the things that we read in our lessons. But still we didn’t know the real situations or clear illustrations when we only read., the second is hearing words or what we hear with 20 percent, When we hear about something, we intend to make pictures or imagined the things that we hear that’s why it has a higher percentage than reading. And the third is seeing or what we see with 30 percent, this is better that what we hear for visual learners because we have the real picture of the things that we need to learn. The fourth is watching movie, looking exhibit and etc. or What we see and hear with 50 percent, Of course if a can show thousand words how about the video, this is very helpful to us, because we can see everything that we need to learn out of the video that we have watched. These are all under passive learning. The next one is the Participation with the discussion or what we say with 70 percent this involves the students and teachers interaction or collaboration so that they will learn ideas, opinions and knowledge with each other. The last one are Doing Dramatic scenes, simulation with real object or what we say and do with 90 percent, Because when we allow our students to have a presentation by doing or working out the learning from what they have collaborate, the outcome of this is very effective for deep learning with enjoyment are under Active learning.
Explain the shape and the arrangement of experiences.
It was arranged according to their percentage as you can see the largest percentage are in the last or bottom of the cone and it decreases at the top which is reading.
III. Current Concepts and Trends in Instructional Technology
Explain what is all about
Active learning according to Edgar Dale’s cone of experiences we have 70 percent for what we say and 90 percent for what we say and do. I really appreciate this topic because as I observed this is very effective to our students as of now. You can still use these strategies to improve you class with technology for broader understanding of each and other students in your class.
Discuss its significance/impact in the teaching-learning process.
Of course if we say active learning. It must involve collaboration, discussion, interaction with each other. It depends upon the teacher strategy to make the classroom alive and without boredom. Groupings, Simulation, Peer instruction, are the examples that you can apply in your class.
Provide a concrete example on how it is conducted, implemented or applied.
Choose a specific level (e.g. pre-school, grade school, junior high, senior high)
Choose a specific subject (e.g. English, Science, Math, Geography, etc.)
Choose a specific topic or lesson
I want to teach Junior High because they are more mature when it comes to study. I will choose the science subject and we are going to study the scientific method. There are, first I will discuss the steps. First is Ask a question, next is doing the background research and after that they will construct a Hypothesis They must do an experiment and analyze data and the report or the result of what they have done.
I will group them into 4 groups and ask to do that activity, by this kind of strategy, they are learning from each other and knowing each other opinions. I will give it as a Group activity to be pass after one week so that they have enough time to do it and to learn more effectively. Doing an experiment is very interesting and an effective way also to enhance their knowledge, capabilities and skills.
“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” (Phil 4:13)
